Basic Gourmet Cooking Skills

Even the greatest chefs had to start off as complete beginners. They also had to learn the ropes from scratch , just like you and I. The learning never stops and as an aspiring gourmet chef there are many skills that you will need to master. The basic skills that all cooks master will enable you to grow and eventually use these skills as you master new cooking styles such as Thai , Middle Easter or Indian cuisine.

Developing your skills on a daily basis is what will eventually separate you from the average cooks. Developing your skill sets will largely depend on you reasons for cooking. Whether you are cooking to feed the family , as a hobby or as a budding chef – these factors will to a large extent will determine the level of skills that you will need. Whatever you reasons are , mastering the basic skills will ensure you success.

Grasping the terminology is the first step to mastering the basic skills. If you are a complete novice there will be many new and often confusing terms , many of these based on French terms. Mastering these will be the difference between becoming a gourmet cook and an average cook. Look around at your local book store there will be 100s of cookery books that cover these basic skills. Terms such as making a “roux” or “folding in the eggs” will be covered in detail. Mastering these terms is essential to your success.

Start small and and develop your skills incrementally. Start with easier recipes and progress to more difficult recipes as your confidence and skill levels grow. This may take a while , but practice makes perfect and after a while you will have mastered some recipes that you can add to you skills base.

Once you master the basics you will never need revisit them. You will be able to build on these skills and learn new techniques as you grow as a gourmet cook. As you become more skilled you will start preparing your own meals from scratch instead of buying ready to eat meals off the shelves.

As you become more confident you will start improvising and adjusting recipes developing your own style. Knowing what flavors to combine and what adjustments to makes to recipes will allow you to acheive this objective. One day you will find yourself developing your own recipes from scratch. To develop to this level of skill you need to learn and master the basics.
